This project explores how a single piece of furniture can operate as a catalyst for spatial experience and local identity in a small rural town. Set in Higashikawa, Hokkaido—known for its strong woodworking culture—the proposal begins with a simple question: what if a chair is not just an object, but a device that frames relationships between people, landscape, and place?

Rather than designing a conventional seat, the project develops a hybrid between furniture and micro-architecture. The chair incorporates vertical and horizontal frames that subtly define enclosure, orientation, and view. It allows users to sit, pause, and engage with their surroundings in a more intentional way, transforming an ordinary act into a mindful spatial experience. The form is minimal but deliberate, emphasizing proportion, materiality, and the tactile quality of wood, in line with Higashikawa’s local craft traditions.

The proposal extends beyond a single object into a territorial strategy. By “planting” these chairs across different sites—forests, open fields, and village edges—a network of small, contemplative spots is created throughout the town. Each placement frames a specific view or condition, encouraging users to rediscover familiar landscapes from new perspectives. Over time, these distributed interventions form a subtle layer of public space, activating the rural environment without imposing large-scale infrastructure.

Importantly, the project aligns with sustainability and local production. The chairs can be fabricated using local timber and craftsmanship, reinforcing regional identity while supporting a slower, more reflective lifestyle. In this sense, the design is not about adding new destinations, but about intensifying the experiential quality of what already exists.
