City in a Park

This project rethinks the edge condition of Boramae Park in Seoul, addressing how its current linear and rigid boundary limits spatial continuity between the park and the surrounding city. Despite the park’s size and programmatic richness, its perimeter—defined by dense planting, fences, and unclear entry points—functions as a barrier rather than a transition, weakening pedestrian flow and urban integration.

The proposal introduces the concept of “City in a Park,” shifting the boundary from a fixed line to an ակտիվ, porous zone where urban and park elements overlap. Through site analysis, key pedestrian nodes and interrupted circulation patterns are identified, reframing the edge as a thickened interface rather than a simple border. The design responds with a “Zigzag Square” strategy, using a modulated, non-linear geometry to break monotony, guide movement, and create pockets for social activity.

Interventions include widening sidewalks, increasing entry points, reorganizing vegetation for better visibility, and inserting small-scale urban programs such as seating, kiosks, and flexible public spaces. Together, these moves transform the park’s edge into an ակտիվ, engaging urban layer that supports both movement and lingering, effectively dissolving the divide between park and city.
